The rocky outcrop overhanging the valley of the Meuse was from time immemorial regarded as strategic. During the history, the castle, "Li Tchestia" took more and more rise to become a powerful fortified town to the 17th century.
The current fort was built with the assistance of the Dutchmen in 1818. As of May 1940 and during four years and half, it became execrable a bagne Nazi. Seven thousand Belgians and foreigners were interned there.
